Why wearing a sunscreen is important!!
Sunscreen or sunblock is a kind of barrier in the form of cream/ lotion/ gel spray or any other topical product that helps in protecting the the skin from harmful rays of the Sun.
Different sunscreens vary in their ability to protect against the harmful UV radiations from sun which reach the surface of earth and causes various skim issues.
- UV radiations are a part of electromagnetic light spectrum that reaches Earth from Sun, UV radiations are basically of two types UV A and UV B.
- UV A radiations have longer wavelength and reaches the dermis of skin where as UV B radiations are short wave UV rays and reaches up to epidermis.
- UV A radiations at present throughout the day and are more harmful to the skin as they penetrate deeper into the skin layers.
- UV B rays are mostly present between 10 a.m. to 4p.m.
The average person can stay in Sun and with no sunscreen for at least 15 minutes before starting to burn. There are different types of sunscreens based upon the composition.
The chemical sunscreens they absorb the UV radiations and potentially harmful to the skin because they comprises of of several chemicals that can damage our skin can degrade when exposed to UV rays require 20 minutes wait for ingredients to be effective.
Mineral sunscreen are not observed in blood stream and reflect UV rays, do not degrade when exposed to UV rays and effect immediately.
When looking for a sunscreen one should choose a broad spectrum sunscreen lotion or cream because broad spectrum sunscreen protect the skin from both UVA and UVB no sunscreen blocks hundred percent of UV rays all sunscreens need to be e reapplied at least after 2 hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
What is SPF?
SPF is sun protection factor which measures the ability of the sunscreen to prevent UV rays from damaging the skin spf is the rating of how well the sunscreen blocks the sun’s harmful radiations.
One ounce of sunscreen is an adequate amount to be used when most of skin is exposed while wearing a swimsuit and should be reapplied every 2 hours.
Know about the Sunscreen toxicity rating, Mineral and Chemical Based Sunscreens. One should always look for or mineral based sunscreen which contain mainly zinc oxide or Titanium dioxide.
Chemicals like oxybenzone methoxycinnamate octisalate octicrylone are the different harmful chemicals used in chemical based sunscreens.
